I loved this novel so much. Where do I even begin? Our protagonist, Stratus, wakes up in a field with no memory and is quickly besieged by soldiers. We then quickly learn that Stratus may appear human, but he is definitely something more. As Stratus struggles to regain his memory and figure out who he is he stumbles around in the human world, quickly summoning trouble. People tend to find some reason to kill him, and Stratus is bizarrely comfortable with killing them first. This story is very dark with not many happy people, but also managed to lace in a fair dose of humor (mostly Stratus's deadpan wit) and the action can be almost fun if you don't mind a lot of gore and occasionally being rather twisted.

Multiple mysterious keep the story going in a compelling way--just who, or what, is Stratus? Who is this Worm Lord and what is his deal? The problems of the human world slowly unfold around Stratus and he gets caught up in their problems. He makes some friends and many, many more enemies. As dark or twisted as the pages sometimes got, I found I just kept coming back to this novel and finish it.

I love the ending. This novel is clearly the first of many, and sets things up nicely. The ending is a bit of a cliffhanger but its a good one--closing some mysterious, opening up a dozen more. I can't wait to see what's next.

Infernal Mark de Jager 9781785033346 Books Reviews

Enjoyed it but it stops mid-story. Not that I object to series but I do hate buying books that only tell part of the story but that don't give any hint of that on the cover. If it hadn't been for that I'd have given it four stars
A strange and original story with a cliffhanger punchline at the end. Stratus has no memory and thus it is curiosity rather than characterisation that keeps us with him through the first few chapters. However, as he gradually regains some sense of himself, and circumstance forces his development, the mystery becomes entangled with his emerging personality - especially in regard to his growing relationship with the royal bodyguard, Tatyana - and, despite his inhuman (and occasionally repellent) aspects, you find yourself rooting for him. Sometimes, in fact, his ingenuousness leaves smiling at the most unexpected moments
The magical elements have their own logical schematic - much in the manner of Brandon Sanderson - and the whole thing is masterfully constructed, leading to the final revelation which, much to the reader's mingled frustration and anticipation, reveals Infernal as the first of a series.
Well-written, and a worthy precursor for what promises to be an entertaining follow-up.
This has been a netgalley review.
One can quickly know who he is but the quest is indeed interesting. The ending falls short, even if another book will follow as some more blood is expected
A little more violent than I'd recommend for kids, but nothing too bad for anyone who watches R-rated movies. Tons of fun and a fast moving story.
Honestly, I was quite impressed by the ideea of the book, but was let down quite hard once I stumbled upon the awkward metaphors and dull writing style. If you want to burn some free time, that you cannot possibly fill with anything else, and you also enjoy some very (incredibly) light reading, then this is the book for you.
