Another good C J Box book. I've read all of them in the Joe Pickett series up to this one and it doesn't disappoint.

I enjoy the way Pickett will introduce current issues of controversy into his stories. In this case, the wind farms that are despoiling great views the nation over. Without turning into a rant, Pickett does a good job of presenting the "other point of view," (in other words, the non-pc point of view) in issues that are very controversial in the West.

Cold Wind involves wind turbines, murder, and the mother-in-law who makes all others look like a blessing Missy (whatever her current last name is with husband number five). Joe Pickett brings the same less-than-perfect everyman perspective to solving the case. It has a great ending, particularly for fans of the series.

I look forward to every new Joe Pickett novel. The plotting is always good and occasionally great, and since I am a fan of outdoor mysteries, I always greatly enjoy the author's evocation of the Wyoming landscape. This book is no exception. It is suspenseful and offers up new twists right up to literally the last page.
The one reason why I do not give this book, and for that matter any of Box's novels, the full five stars has to do with his development of the characters. Joe Pickett and his family are about as well developed and as realistic as possible. However, many other major characters are written in such a way as to frequently cross the line from character to caricature. That's particularly true for the annoying characters, such as the stupid but scheming Sheriff and his oafish deputies, the lawn-Nazi neighbor (who fortunately does not show up in this one), the evil mother-in-law, but also the likable characters such as the governor, the flamboyant lawyer, and even Nate "Rambo" Romanowski. Box may think that this makes them more colorful, but it actually just makes them less believable. Making them more "real" would not detract at all from the excitement of the stories, but it would stop the educated reader from frequently pausing and thinking "no way anybody would actually act like that!"
C.J. Box's latest in the Joe Pickett series features some familiar characters, touches on some new political issues and includes a good amount of action. "Cold Wind" finds Fish and Game Warden Pickett's much detested mother-in-law, Missy, accused of murdering her wealthy fifth husband, Earl Alden. Everyone in the Wyoming town of Saddlestring, where the crime occurs, is ready to believe the worst of Missy Alden. The sheriff and local district attorney believe that they have more than enough evidence to convict her. Urged on by his distraught wife, Pickett jumps into the case along its margins to try and prove that his mother-in-law, while guilty of countless ethical and moral infractions, did not kill her husband. His informal investigation gradually turns up more and more evidence that the murder victim had a long line of enemies who hated him enough to do him in.

Moving at a pretty good clip, the plot also includes a long look at the wind energy industry, the ins and outs of the construction of wind farms, and the possible fleecing of the national government as unscrupulous operators take advantage of federal subsidies for new energy sources--this being the trademark airing of local vs. federal issues that author Box works into most of his Wyoming-based novels. .

Also a big part of the action in "Cold Wind" is renegade super hero, Nate Romanowski, who narrowly avoids an assassination attempt that kills his girlfriend and sets him on the road to bloody revenge. His place in the story eventually connects at the end of Joe Pickett's slow piecing together of a solution to the murder case.

C.J. Box fans will not be disappointed with this clever and rapidly moving story that hits familiar touchstones and provides a satisfying conclusion. While you may not always agree with the political and social issues that Box drops into his novels, they reasonably represent the environment that the author writes about and are rarely uninteresting.

This is a satisfying read that is hard to put down once started. Highly recommended.
I've read every Joe Pickett novel (though not bothered to review them all) and this is one of his best. Unlike Blood Trail where I could figure out the killer almost from the point she was introduced in the story, I was always second-guessing my thoughts as to "who done it?" throughout the book. Unlike Box's occasional flub, like 1000 yard pistol shots, his description of the distorted incentives associated with the wind energy program seem spot on in my experience. We had massive wind farms built in west Texas but only a handful of towers were permitted to turn for years. Then the truth came out that the hundreds of towers had been built without transmission lines to get the power to market, so every CPS rate payer was hit with a massive increase in his bill in order to fund the building of the transmission lines, after the fact. Studies showed it would have been far cheaper and more flexible just to have built a couple natural gas fired plants and been done with it. The point is, such big-government, big incentive programs attract a lot of money and a lot of powerful interests who may well stop at nothing. Box does a great job of weaving that into a first rate murder mystery. Yes, the basic theme of the plot has been done before, but Box does a great job of wrapping his characters around the idea in a way that does not leave you anything you can hang your hat on to say, I know exactly where this is going. He also does a nice job of showing the incompetent and corrupt side of small town politicos not just the Federal guys. We have a corrupt incompetent sheriff (we've seen that before) and a judge more interested in sheep hunting than justice. In fact the FBI comes out looking ok in this novel even though their appearance is a cameo. Nate returns in all his enigmatic glory; what is not to like?
